The Muscle Shoals area produced W. C. Handy, the father of the blues, and Sam Phillips, the father of rock and roll. It also attracted Jerry Wexler, who coined the term "Rhythm and Blues." Muscle Shoals influenced the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, Cher, Bob Dylan, The Osmonds, Bob Seeger, Paul Simon, and countless others who came here to record hit records. The magnitude of the local contributions to popular music cannot be matched anywhere in the world. The Muscle Shoals Songwriter Showcase hosted by Jerry McGee and Mickey Buckins is your opportunity to hear for yourself what the "Muscle Shoals Sound" is all about.

    Spooner Oldham is a legend to those who know of his contributions, playing with Linda Rhonstadt and the Stone Ponies, Neil Young, and Jewel, to name just three! Tonight Spooner performs two of his greatest creations, "Sweet Inspiration" and "I'm Your Puppet." This is a rare glimpse of one of Muscle Shoals' greatest.     On March 4, 1999, the Muscle Shoals Songwriter Showcase presented "Funky" Donnie Fritts delivering an evening of entertainment that is as much Muscle Shoals as is the river that gives us its name. Fritts enlists Kelvin Holly, Scott Boyer, Terry Richardson, and others for outstanding renditions of some of the special songs he's penned. Catch Mickey's interview following the performance for Fritt's songwriting and movie projects.

    The Muscle Shoals Songwriter Showcase hosted by Jerry McGee and Mickey Buckins featured Will McFarlane and Donna Jean Godchaux Mackay on May 6, 1999. Will McFarlane migrated to Muscle Shoals from Boston, Massachusetts, having played with Bonnie Raitt and the Pointer Sisters. Will is a leader in the area's strong Contemporary Christian Music community, an outstanding producer, lead guitar player for The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, and a pretty good baseball player. Donna Jean, a native of nearby Sheffield, Alabama, was a member of the legendary Grateful Dead for nine years, after being a background vocalist on many hits here in the Shoals, and even recorded with Elvis Presley. Enjoy these talented musicians that call Muscle Shoals, Alabama home.

    The Muscle Shoals Songwriter Showcase hosted by Jerry McGee and Mickey Buckins featured Randy McCormick, Max Russell, and Topper Price on August 5, 1999. It was W.C. Handy week in the Shoals area. If you have never been to one, make plans now. It is a great week of celebrating the "Blues" in venues all over the "Shoals." Randy McCormick plays several of his hits including "Suspicions," Max Russell and son Kirk burn up their guitars with hot Blues licks, and Topper Price closes the big night of Blues with some of the best Blues harmonica in the Southeast.

Mark Narmore is one of the best known writers on the Nashville scene, and he still lives in downtown Center Star! Mark's hits include Shenandoah's "Moon Over Georgia," and he is currently writing for Reba McEntire's new publishing company, the Starstruck Writers Group. Highlight includes tribute to Bob Dylan's Muscle Shoals cut of "You've Got To Serve Somebody."

    The Muscle Shoals Songwriter Showcase hosted by Jerry McGee and Mickey Buckins featured Mae McKenna on October 28, 1999. Mae McKenna was backed by members of the Full Moon Ensemble, including Daniel Carwile, Scooter Muse, Tom Risher, Annette Labrecque, and special guests Marie Lewey and David Hood. Mae McKenna grew up near Glasgow, Scotland, becoming a Scottish Folk-Rock & Celtic Rock legend, when her first band, Contraband, released their first album in 1973. Mae continues to be one of the most sought after session singers in England. Thanks to all who made this wonderful evening possible.

    The Muscle Shoals Songwriter Showcase hosted by Jerry McGee and Mickey Buckins featured "Microwave Dave" Gallaher and Randy Howard on November 4, 1999. "Microwave Dave" plays the "Blues" and Randy Howard keeps you laughing for an evening of top notch entertainment. "Microwave" shows why he is one of the best known and respected "Blues" artists in the South, and his "Too Tall to Mambo" should not be missed. Randy follows with a variety of funny original tunes and stories, making this a fun evening.

    The Muscle Shoals Songwriter Showcase hosted by Jerry McGee and Mickey Buckins featured Buddy Killen on November 4, 1999. Buddy Killen, the first person inducted into The Alabama Music Hall of Fame, performs several songs from his newly released CD. Buddy was "home" supporting the University of North Alabama's Entertainment Industry Center and graciously accepted Jerry and Mickey's invitation to appear on this showcase. Here's a chance to see and hear Country Music's greatest publisher and one of Country Music's best producers, Buddy Killen, sing songs that are special to him, and he tells you why.

    The Muscle Shoals Songwriter Showcase hosted by Jerry McGee and Mickey Buckins showcased Jerry Wallace and Terry Skinner and N.C. Thurman and Scott Boyer doing some of their terrific songs. Wayne Chaney, Kevin Holly, David Hood, and as always Terry Richardson of the Midnighters helped Mickey and Jerry produce another great night of music on December 2, 1999.

On January 6, 2000, Russell, Medford, and Mitch Mann treat you to their duo sound and Jay Wilson entertains with songs from his latest CD, recorded at Johnny Sandlin's Duck Tape Studio in Decatur. Max Russell, Matthew Gibbs, and Wayne Chaney join in for a great jam.

    Mickey and Jerry celebrated the third anniversary of the Muscle Shoals Songwriter Showcase on February 3, 2000 by turning the show over to a group of Nashville Songwriters called "Girls with Guitars." Cindy Kalmenson, Cheley Tackett, Lisa Carver, and the dynamic duo of Lisa Christian and Lisa Durand energized the large Muscle Shoals audience with great songs and rousing performances.     The March 2, 2000 Muscle Shoals Songwriter's Showcase features Scott Boyer, Cecilia Halsey, and Spooner Oldham. Scott Boyer, one of the best writers in the area, kicks off the evening with his Eric Clapton cut "Please Be With Me" and debuts a new one called "Muscle Shoals." Spooner Oldham, a great ambassador for Muscle Shoals music sings some of his early Blues tunes that helped Muscle Shoals become world famous. Spooner has performed and/or recorded with Janice Joplin, Linda Ronstadt, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Jewel. Cecilia Halsey closes the great night with cuts from her latest CD. Cecilia has everything needed to make it big in Country Music. See and hear this powerful singer performing with a full band including Mark Beckett, son of former Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section player Barry Beckett, playing drums.

Here was a special added treat: Thursday, November 2, 2000 was Open Mic Nite, where aspiring singers belted it out in the hope of getting noticed by industry folks. It was fun!

    The Muscle Shoals Songwriter Showcase hosted by Jerry McGee and Mickey Buckins presented Travis Wammack on November 2, 1998 at Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Travis Wammack is still rockin' and you can see it right here LiveOnTheNet. Travis moved to Muscle Shoals in 1969 to work with Rick Hall at Fame Recording Studio and has been rockin' this town ever since. Travis has added his touch to records by artists as diverse as the Osmond Brohters, Clarence Carter, Bobbie Gentry, Wilson Pickett, Candi Staton, Liza Minnelli, Mac Davis, and Little Richard, whom he toured with for ten years as the leader of the band. Travis, as many of the Shoals players, plays locally and should be seen live whenever possible, but this set will give you a taste of a fabulous entertainer.
